The inventor of stainless steel, Harry Brearley, was born in Sheffield, England in 1871. Harry Brearley's father was a steel melter and he had to quit school at the age of twelve to get a job washing bottles in a chemical laboratory. But by years of private study and night school Harry became an expert in the analysis of steel and its production. After several years, Harry established his reputation for solving metallurgical problems, then he was given the opportunity in 1908 to set up the Brown Firth Laboratories, which was financed by the two leading Sheffield steel companies of the day. This was a highly innovative idea for its time; research for its own sake on the problems of steel making.
In 1912, Harry was asked to help in the problems being encountered by metal foundries, whereby the internal diameter of rifle barrels was eroding away too quickly because of the action of heating and discharge gases. Harry was therefore looking for a steel with better resistance to erosion, not corrosion. As a line of investigation he decided to experiment with steels containing chromium, as these were known to have a higher melting point than ordinary steels. Chromium steels were already at that time being used for valves in aero engines. Iron has an atomic weight of 56, chromium 52, so chromium steel valves are lighter than their carbon steel counterparts.

Technical Info - Stainless Steel Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion is the natural degradation of a material due to atmospheric conditions or other factors. Corrosion is generally defined as dissolution of a material due to a reaction with the surrounding environment. Only metals such as gold and platinum are found in a pure form, normal metals only exist combined with other elements. Corrosion is therefore a natural phenomenon, as nature seeks to combine elements which man has produced in a pure form. More specific: iron occurs naturally as iron ore (FE) wants to combine with oxygen molecules from the air and water and then it will "rust". Carbon steels without any protection will therefore form a coating of rust, which will in a sense protect the rest of the steel and constantly removing the rust exposes a new fresh layer of steel to be chemical decompostion. Therefore, carbon steel enclosure, box and cabinet products will rust when there is no protective coatings on the surfaces. And the corrosion resistance of a stainless steel is dependent on a thin invisible film on the steel surface that is called the passive film. There are, however, environments that cause permanent breakdown of the passive layer. Under circumstances where the passive layer cannot be rebuilt, corrosion occurs on the unprotected surface. Different media can cause different types of corrosion attack that may vary in nature and appearance, and several forms of corrosion can occur on stainless steels. And therefore, some stainless steel enclosure, box & cabinet products will rust when the stainless is contaminated or damaged.

Stainless steel is the generic name for a number of different steels used primarily because of their corrosion resistance. All stainless steels share a minimum percentage of 10.5% chromium. Chromium is always the deciding factor, although other elements, particularly nickel and molybdenum, are added to improve corrosion resistance. The success of the material is based on the fact that it has one unique advantage. The chromium in the stainless steel has a great affinity for oxygen, and will form a film of chromium oxide on the surface of the steel at a molecular level. The film itself is extremely thin, about 130 Angstroms and one Angstrom is one millionth of a centimetre. This layer is described as passive (does not react or influence other materials), tenacious (clings to the layer of steel and is not transferred elsewhere) and self-renewing (if damaged, more chromium from the steel will be exposed to the air and form more chromium oxide). This means that over a period of years a stainless steel knife can literally be worn away by daily use and will still remain stainless.

Applications: NEMA 6 enclosures are typically made of (304 or 316) stainless steel, plastic and sometimes marine epoxy coated carbon steel. These NEMA 6 enclosures are used for any application to protect equipment from temporary submersion in water but not any salt water, acidic fluids, oils or flammable. A few examples of NEMA 6 enclosure applications for any heavy washdown for cleaning or temporary submersion from rainwater but not prolonged. The Tough Tigerbox™ NEMA 6 enclosures are available in carbon steel, 304 & 316 stainless steel and available with continuous hinges, mounting feet and sometimes special fittings for applications. Applications: NEMA 6p enclosures are mostly made of 304/316 stainless steel for industrial applications and sometimes plastic for inexpensive electronics. The NEMA 6 enclosures are used in applications where more protection is needed and there might be water submersion. Applications where corrosive materials (for example saltwater) and caustic cleaners are used necessitate the use of a NEMA 6 enclosure. NEMA 7 Enclosure Rating
Definition: Enclosures are for indoor use in locations classified as Class I, Groups A, B, C, or D.
Applications: NEMA 7 enclosures are mostly made of heavy cast iron, cast stainless steel or cast aluminum. The cover flange and the base flange are machined flat and even for a type surface fit. The enclosures are typically used in facortories, chemical refineries or offshore drilling platforms.
NEMA 9 Enclosure Rating
Definition: Enclosures are intended for indoor use in locations classified as Class II, Groups E, F, or G, and shall be capable of preventing the entrance of dust. Enclosed heat generating devices shall not cause external surfaces to reach temperatures capable of igniting or discoloring dust on the enclosure or igniting dust-air mixtures in the surrounding atmosphere. Enclosures shall meet dust penetration and temperature design tests, and aging of gaskets (if used).
Applications: The typical NEMA 9 enclosure is fabricated from heavy cast iron, cast stainless steel or cast aluminum. The enclosure cover flange and the enclosure base flange are machined flat and even for a type surface fit. The enclosures are typically used in factories, chemical refineries, oil & gas offshore facilities, drilling platforms or dusty environment.
NEMA 12 Enclosure Rating
Definition: Enclosures constructed (without knockouts) for indoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt; against circulating dust, lint, fibers, and against dripping and light splashing of liquids.
Applications:The typical NEMA 12 enclosure is designed to prevent the ingress of dust and water. NEMA 12 enclosures are most often used for indoor applications of automation control and electronic drives systems. Some examples for a NEMA 12 enclosure applications are packaging, material handling, non-corrosive process control and other manufacturing environments. Commonly, the NEMA 12 enclosure has gasketed doors seals to prevent airborne contaminants (dust) and water from entering the enclosure. NEMA 12 enclosures are available in sizes from small wall mounts to two-door floor mount models.
